Big permit filed for Shrek 4-D replacement at Universal Studios Florida, Project 331, rumored to be the Minions Villain-Con attraction. They’ll wind and glide through various scenes where they earn points by blasting a variety of items and causing as much mayhem and destruction as possible. “Guests who are up for the challenge will grab an interactive blaster and step onto a motion-based pathway to put their skills to the test. Universal has confirmed that we will be earning points by blasting targets throughout the attraction, saying: See the video version of this story below for additional visuals.īased on the Minions spin-off films, the new attraction will take guests to “Villain-Con – the biggest criminal convention on the planet – to take part in an epic competition to see if they have what it takes to become the newest member of The Vicious 6, a notorious group of supervillains from the hit film, “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”Īs we have spoke about previously, the new attraction will employ a moving walkway, where guests will stand in place while they are taken through each scene on the ride. ![]() The new Minion Café and Villain-Con attraction will join the existing Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride to become a new Minion Land on Illumination Ave. Instead, it's been allowed to rot, and in my opinion hurts the overall Shrek brand.Universal Orlando has officially announced the long-rumored replacement for Shrek 4-D at Universal Studios Florida, officially named “Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast.” This interactive attraction has been confirmed to utilize a moving walkway, combining screen technology, gaming interactivity, and physical sets.Īs part of today’s announcement, Universal has also revealed Minion Café will also be opening along with the new attraction. With no new significant content for the IP since 2010, Universal could have at least developed a new film following on from Shrek Forever After that could have made this attraction fresh for the last 7 years. The film was explicitly designed to fit snugly between the original Shrek and Shrek 2, yet Dreamworks produced 2 more sequels that make this film obsolete. At the very least if Universal was forced by contract to keep Shrek 4D running for 10+ years, they could have at least done a modest update halfway through the run to bring the film into context with the sequels. I understand that licenses and contracts can sometimes get in the way, but theme parks should be a little more savvy with how they develop, license, and present IP in their parks. It's shameful and lazy that theme parks build attractions like this with flexibility yet sit on their hands, saving their pennies, while an IP slowly declines (I'm looking at you Philharmagic). 10, 2022, ending an 18+ year run that began in 2003. A moving walkway attraction based on the Minions has been rumored to be the replacement. As a result of the former attraction being surrounded by temporary work walls, Minions graphics have been installed. Honestly, attractions like this should be turned over every 5-7 years, not every 15 years. As reported by Orlando Informer, Shrek 4D will officially close on Jan. The official closing of Shrek 4-D at Universal StudiosFlorida occurred last month. The last Shrek movie (Shrek Forever After) came out in 2010!!! Certainly the IP has not dropped completely from the public consciousness, but a nearly 14 year run and almost 7 years from the last theatrical release is more than enough time for theme park guests to get their fill. Why theme parks continue to allow these attractions to flounder in the past is beyond me. It's cheap and easy to convert an aging film out for a newer, trendier IP (including upgrading projection and effects technology). The lack of turnover theme parks use for their 4-D theaters and other screen-based attractions is astounding. Russell Meyer Edited: May 18, 2017, 8:44 AM
